New injection moulding machines yield tremendous energy savings at RWC’s Launceston site

With sustainability at the forefront of RWC’s vision, recently the business introduced new injection moulding machines at their Launceston Cornwall site where the company had previously used hydraulic injection moulding equipment producing a single part per cycle. With this upgrade RWC has switched to low-energy servo-hydraulic machines that produce double the output per cycle, which is great for the site’s carbon performance and its operational output.

As a result of the over £2m investment having occurred over a 2-year period, the Launceston site averaged a 66% reduction in energy consumption and became able to produce over 10 million components a month. This change was introduced by RWC’s expert moulding team, which has ensured the highest quality and output from the investment.

Prior to the investment, the building drew a maximum load of 267Kw which has now dropped to 82Kw. With an average household supply of 20Kw in the UK, the 24 injection moulding machines and all their associated equipment consume the same amount of power as four domestic homes. With sustainability in mind, the facility is also fitted with a 150Kw solar panel installation. This means that on sunny days, the machines do not draw any power from the grid and run totally on renewable energy.

The injection moulding machines are making such a positive difference already and this is just one of the many initiatives that RWC are taking across many of their sites globally.
