Events and exhibitions are regular occurrences in every plumber’s calendar, but how do you get the most out of them? Here, we delve into the dos and don’ts of plumbing exhibitions, to really ensure every box is ticket.
The dos and don’ts of attending plumbing exhibitions
Exhibitions are great for installers. They provide fantastic insight on new product lines, technologies and market trends, as well as provide an invaluable opportunity to build up your network and learn from like-minded people. They can also be a bit daunting, mesmerising and, quite frankly, huge. But don’t worry, we have the perfect guide for you to really make the most out of your next exhibition.
Don’t go to every exhibition in the calendar
Before you sign up to anything, make sure that plumbing exhibitions are right for you. There are lots of exhibitions throughout the year and before deciding on which to attend, ask yourself “do I need to attend?” and “what will I get out of it?”
Do plan ahead
Exhibition halls can be really daunting. In most cases, there are multiple spaces with hundreds of stands showcasing the latest products. So before you arrive, research the floor plan, take a look at which stands you want to visit and see if there are any seminars or speakers lined up. Once you’ve done this, map out your journey around the exhibition halls and do some homework so you can extract the most information when you attend. Find out what the exhibitors have to offer and start to think about how they can help you and your business.
Don’t take excess items
Bear in mind that you’ll be on your feet for the majority of the day, so you don’t want to be carrying around excess items. Take your coat to the cloakroom and don’t carry too much in your bag because you’ll need space for the freebies!
Do take plenty of business cards
Business cards that contain your contact details can save you lots of valuable time filling out forms. Most exhibitors will be happy to staple your card to their contact forms, which means you can spend less time using a pen and more time looking at all the latest gadgets on offer!
Don’t get too distracted
Nobody would blame you for getting drawn into all the cool new products. And while it’s fine to be intrigued and take an interest, just keep an eye on time, as two minutes can often transpire into 30, and before you know it, it’s almost time to go home.
Do ask questions
Salespeople are often very good at telling you how amazing their products are. They also love questions. Whether you ask how they can specifically help your business, or overcome any challenges you have, make sure you have questions that require specific answers. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for a demonstration or a product sample!
Don’t be intimidated
People in suits can always be intimidating. What’s their agenda? What are they trying to sell? Remember, it’s you that holds the reigns. Visit the stands you want to see and extract information that helps you and your decision making.
Do set aside a good amount of time
Time flies when you’re having fun and exhibitions really do end too soon. We’d recommend you set around four or five hours to really get the most out of your day. Anything less and you run the risk of missing out on some key ingredients for a successful day.
Don’t forget where you parked your car
Ok, so perhaps the most important piece of advice is to remember where you’ve parked. The last thing you want at the end of an exhaustive exhibition is to not be able to find your car. When you park, take a picture, note down your area, anything, as long as you can find it in good time at the end of the day!
Do enjoy it
Exhibitions are there to be enjoyed. If you’ve had a good day then you can count that as a success. Remember, the event doesn’t end when you’ve left the venue. Follow up with your key contacts and make the most out of the day. Are you attending any exhibitions over the coming months? What are your top tips for fellow visitors?
