Stay classy, 2016

Wow, what a year it’s been! Between Brexit, Donald Trump and Leicester City winning the Premiership, the one thing that we can all agree on is this year has been anything but boring. With Christmas just around the corner, we’re feeling all nostalgic, so we decided to catch up with Kristian Johnson, our very own social media whizzkid, to discuss the highs and lows of running the John Guest Twitter account in 2016. Here’s what he had to say:

John Guest

Hi, Kristian.

Q) What are your three Twitter highlights from 2016?

A) For us, launching the ‘Ain’t no pipe dream’ campaign was a real highlight. Not only was it fun to deliver, the response was phenomenal, even better than expected. One Plumb Centre in Lincoln even brought in a real-life Parrot, while Plumbline in Newtown went as far as installing a large gorilla in the shop. 2016 also saw our Twitter following pass the 5,000 mark, showing a real appetite for what we do on social media. The success of the JG Speedfit Kawasaki team this year also created a real buzz on Twitter – with more than 500 retweets combined. Overall we came second in the championship, we had so much engagement from our followers we thought we’d throw in some additional prizes for good measure, bringing countless people together to share our achievement!

Plumbing and Heating installers can also increase their following on social media by posting photographs of their work, sharing top tips on plumbing & heating and encouraging positive customer feedback.

Q) There have been a number of successful competitions on Twitter this year, why were they so well received?

A) Not only were we offering someone the chance to win a Holiday of a lifetime worth £15k, we had fortnightly prizes just to keep people interested, with Love2shop vouchers and lots more. In return, all we asked was for installers to send us a picture of themselves using or buying Layflat Pipe. As expected, the response was great and the campaign was a real success. While we were extremely happy with the level of engagement overall, nobody was more pleased than our very own prize winner.

Q) The JG Speedfit blog has only recently been launched, how is it going?

A) We’ve had a really positive response from installers, many of whom have told us how interesting they have found the content. In order to engage our communities we aim to create content that is both interesting and relevant, enabling us to meet the needs of our audiences. Our most popular blog to date was the ‘Push-fit myths’ post. Our research told us that a lot of people initially held a lot of misconceptions around push-fit fittings and feedback suggests that we’re helping installers to understand the benefits of push-fits…long may it continue! We always look out for feedback from our customers and would love to hear from you what you think about our blog.

Q) Who is your JG Speedfit follower of the year and why?

A) I would have to say Total Plumbing (@totalplumbinguk) has been my favourite follower, they’ve given us loads of mentions and we’ve also teamed up on a few promotions throughout the year. They joined Twitter towards the back end of last year and already have more than 1,000 followers. The stuff they post is great value and so I hope their success continues! I must say though, that everyone in our Twitter community has been great to engage with this year.

Q) What can you tell us about your Twitter plans for 2017?

A) We have some exciting campaigns and mini competitions coming in 2017 which will create a huge buzz amongst plumbers and stockists. Interested? You’ll just have to wait and see what we’ve got in store!
